Adina Ofek
Associate Professor


A native of Czechoslovakia who grew up in Israel, Adina Ofek has had an impact on Jewish education in the United States and in the international community.

Following her graduation from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Dr. Ofek completed a master's degree in Applied linguistics at Teachers College and a doctorate in Jewish Education at JTS. Dr. Ofek was responsible for the staff-development programs for teachers of Hebrew language and literature in a program jointly sponsored by the Israel Ministry of Education and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Since coming to JTS in 1976, Dr. Ofek has served the institution in many capacities. In addition to chairing the Hebrew department, developing language teaching materials, and developing the mentor program, Dr. Ofek created and directs the Gross Hebrew Language Institute, which serves day school Hebrew language teachers from across the United States, Canada, and South America.

Currently the editor of the Journal of Hebrew Higher Education of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew, Dr. Ofek is also the academic chair of the SAT II Modern Hebrew Education Language Exam for the Educational Testing Service and has served on its committee for the past ten years
